On Tuesday, the Registrar General of India released a special bulletin on the Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR). According to the bulletin, India has recorded an impressive decline in the MMR, which has fallen from 130 maternal deaths per one lakh live births to 97 deaths per one lakh live births over the period of six years. Health Minister, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, stated that various healthcare schemes implemented by Mr. Narendra Modi, Prime Minister, have brought down MMR tremendously.

Among the states mapped by the bulletin, Kerala reported the lowest MMR rate of 19 deaths, while the highest rate was recorded in Assam (195 deaths). The states of Punjab and Haryana showed 105 deaths per one lakh live births and 110 deaths, respectively, which is higher than the national average of 97.

The data also showed that 32%, 30%, and 20% of maternal deaths were observed in the age groups of 20 to 24 years, 25–29 years, and 30 to 34 years, respectively. According to the bulletin, 6% of the deaths in the past 10 to 15 years indicated the still-existing trend of child marriage.
